Stratford Upon Avon College Campus

O’Brien Contractors Ltd has recently completed the external £1.2 million hard and soft landscaping scheme, which is part of the ongoing £10.3 million increase in capital investment in Stratford upon Avon College of Further and Higher Education.

The overall upgrade of the facilities at the campus involved a comprehensive staged refurbishment, with unsuitable buildings being demolished and the campus rationalised, with the retained buildings being upgraded.

The 10,000m2 of infrastructure and landscaped facilities undertaken by O’Brien’s provided communal meeting areas, contemplation zones and pedestrian links between the remaining educational departments.

The 16-week Design and Build contract started on commencement of the 2023 Summer recess, with major sections needing to be completed prior to the return of staff ahead of scheduled open days for potential students at the end of August 2023.

Our works included:

  • Suds drainage and Attenuation
  • Data and Power Infrastructure
  • Hard Landscaping
  • Lighting
  • EV Charging Stations
  • Soft Landscape Planting
  • Street Furniture

Specialist Measures:

It was imperative for the college that access to the various facilities were made available by this time and that the surrounding environment did not affect the smooth running of the college, with students’ wellbeing paramount. There was a desire by the College that prospective and existing students along with parents had a flavour of the look and feel of the future completed campus. These requirements were understood from the outset and O’Brien’s were able to design and plan the scheme around these needs and negate any disruption that is often caused by construction activities on a live educational facility.

“Finally, please do pass on our thanks to all who works on the scheme. As mentioned yesterday, it is acknowledged that it was a tight programme with some challenges, but O’Brien’s pragmatic approach in dealing with the site issues and working with the college to deliver the project on time is much appreciated.”

Sustainability:

We recycled 2500 tonne of demolition arisings that had been left onsite, crushed the hard waste to 40mm down aggregate and had it classified to a 6f2 granular fill material and reused this as capping saving on the amount of residual waste going to landfill and subsequently the import of quarried granular fill to make up levels.
