Joseph Chamberlain College – Birmingham

O’Brien Contractors Ltd undertook a £1.65 million Design and Build contract for Joseph Chamberlain College in Highgate, Birmingham. The brownfield land the College purchased was the former site of British Car Auctions and the development consists of a 3G MUGA pitch, associated 125 space car park and welfare/changing room facility.

The 1419m2 multi use games area is used predominately for 5A Side football and has a Domo Duraforce XSL 50-14 carpet, with integrated pitch markings, which complies to FIFA Quality control testing requirements. The carpet has a sand stabilising layer with a SBR performance infill, that does not require a Shockpad. The Infill being 15kg/m² of 0.8-2.5mm SBR and 12kg/m² of 0.315-0.8mm sand.

The dynamic pitch supporting foundation layer consists of a 300mm deep free draining Type 3x subbase, discharging water through a perforated 80mm diameter primary drainage system. Fencing to the perimeter of the pitch consists of 3.0m high weld mesh with a 2.0m high 100 x 100mm polypropylene sports ball netting fixed above the weld mesh on one end and half a side to act as additional ball stop retention. The fencing was installed by SAPCA affiliated contractor, B&L fencing Ltd of Bromsgrove.

The pitch is illuminated to an average 150 lux for night-time use, and lamps being warm white 3000k colour temperature LEDs to minimise the ecological and environmental impact on wildlife, mounted on 6m high columns. The lighting was manufactured and supplied by Holophane.

Works on the site commenced early October 2022, with the facility completed in the Spring of 2023 ready for the College to use the new facilities.
