Bromsgrove School, Worcester

O’Brien Contractors were engaged by Bromsgrove School, Worcester as Principal Contractor following a competitive tender exercise for the works on multiple sport pitches, school entrance and car park area. Works were carried out on a live school campus; therefore, a robust traffic management plan was put in place as well as timed deliveries to the school due to the entrance to the school being in a built-up residential area.

Our works were carried out in two locations on the school campus, with the sports pitches on one side of the campus and car park extension and entrance modification works on another side of the campus, with each area accessed via different school access entry points.

Sports Pitches

A temporary works access had to be created to facilitate the refurbishment works on the sports pitches, the area was reinstated on completion of the works.  We also constructed a new emergency vehicle services access between the sports pitches.

Our works on the existing full size hockey pitch entailed the removal of the carpet surface and the shock pad, as well as the timber kickboards.  All existing sports equipment such as seating were temporarily moved off site.  A new rubber shock pad and Astro turf hockey pitch surface was installed along with new softwood kickboards, new floodlighting, and a new scoreboard.

We also carried out the reconstruction of two tennis / netball courts.  We removed the tarmacadam surfaces on two tennis / netball courts and installed new improved drainage due to problems during heavy rainfall on the courts.  On completion of the drainage works a new tarmacadam surface was laid and new markings painted, and new LED lighting columns were installed.

School Entrance and Car Park Extension Works

Excavation works were carried out, to create an extension to the current car park, as well as a new central island and repositioning of the existing pedestrian crossing.  The new parking area was constructed of permeable asphalt, new with block paved and tarmac footpaths.  Works included new low level bollard lighting to the new areas and landscaping works.  A new improved, reconfigured, secure driveway entrance to the school was achieved with new security gates with access control, including installation of power cables for new gates, speed hump installation and resurfacing works.

Client Comment:

“This is the second major sports project the school have contracted to O’Brien, both projects have been carried out to the very high standard expected by the school. We would use O’Brien contractors again for any major sports projects.”
