As part of the contract works at the prestigious Longbridge Town Centre Phase 2 project, we were engaged to undertake all the groundworks for the construction of the region’s largest Marks and Spencer’s store, associated 6 level multi-storey car park, two retail units, large external car park, services yards and access road to adoptable standard.

The groundworks consisted of the excavation and pouring of approximately 290Nr foundations, including 500m3 of lean mix and 2,700m3 of structural concrete, 18,000m2 of floor slabs, 2,700m of foul and storm drainage, 750m of services trenches and the construction of a 12,000m2 external car park and 7,000m2 new access road.

One of the major elements of the works was the construction of a 300m long, 6m high reinforced concrete retaining wall which was constructed in approximately 9 weeks and had a quantity of 2,000m3 of C40 Concrete.

The project had several challenges throughout, including tight programme constraints due to the large number of additional works and design issues that were continually being revised and developed long after the works commenced.

The main achievement was that the project completed a full 6 weeks ahead of the main contractor’s initial programme.
