Aston University’s new £214m Student Village is a residential scheme, comprising 2350 en-suite bedrooms on the university’s campus in Birmingham city centre. The scheme provides the highest standards of quality, sustainability and security, at the heart of the university campus.

Requirement

We undertook the project as principal contractor for a new client, Aston Student Villages, set up to provide a new 2,350 room accommodation block within the existing Aston University campus in Birmingham.

The 24 week enabling works package consisted of the diversion of existing services, both private and owned by the statutory undertakers that ran through the proposed development. These services included high and low voltage electric, telecommunications, including fibre optic and gas and water mains.

Road alterations and new adoptable 278 highway works were constructed to provide new infrastructure to the proposed development. It was also necessary to demolish the existing properties on the site and to provide land remediation before future piling and construction works could take place.

Result/Outcomes

The land remediation involved excavating 9,000m3 of material, processing the material to meet specification requirements and reinstating the resulting material to meet the compaction criteria laid down for end use.

Furthermore, there was a requirement to carry out bulk earthworks of 12,000m3 of reduced level dig, disposal off site and subsequent capping of the formation with granular material prior to the building contractor taking possession of the site.
