Prior to the main works starting onsite, there were a number of existing services that required diverting.
It was imperative that we coordinated and worked alongside the various service providers diverting the services, with no disruption to the adjacent businesses.
The position of the new building was over an existing balancing pond. Within the enabling package, we were required to empty the pond, remove all of the unsuitable arising from the base and stock pile it prior to treatment.
We then constructed a 90lm x 2m high gabion retaining wall, through the existing pond, before carrying out a cut and fill operation.
The next stage involved the cut of around 7000m3 of existing materials and stock piled into new batters. Lime stabilisation and filling of around 4000m3 in the existing pond area, against the newly installed gabion retaining wall, was carried out. A 3400m2 piling mat was then formed prior to the piling contractor attending the site.
The piles were broken down and reinforced concrete foundations installed with holding down bolts. The reinforced concrete lift pit was installed and water proofed, internal drainage and services were installed before the construction of a 175mm reinforced concrete floor slab, approx 2700m2.
The foul drainage was connected into a newly installed pumping station that then fed into the foul drainage over the roadway outside the main heritage centre building. The storm drainage fed into a new 750mm diameter drain that we installed from the existing pond to the existing outfall, diverting the storm water around the new building.
Our external works consisted of shaping up of newly formed batters circa 5000m2 and topsoiling, installing a grasscrete footpath to the perimeter of the building, forming a new base to the pond and installing a pond liner, before covering with topsoil and shaping to form the new design. Installation of services for new lighting and circa 300m2 of resin bound gravel at the new entrance.
