Project Details

Aston University’s new £214m Student Village is a residential scheme, comprising 2350 en-suite bedrooms on the university’s campus in Birmingham city centre. The scheme provides the highest standards of quality, sustainability and security, at the heart of the university campus.

  • Client: Aston University
  • Project: Aston Student Village
  • Location: Birmingham
  • Sector: Education
  • Value: £0.89m
  • Contract Duration: 28 weeks
  • Service: Groundworks, Hard Landscaping

Aston Student Village, the organisation set up to provide a new 2350 room high rise student accommodation within the existing Aston University campus in Birmingham, appointed O’Brien Contractors as principal contractor to undertake upgrades to pedestrian areas around the campus in order for the landscaping to compliment the new building development.

The works required the excavation of 2500m2 of existing dated hard and soft landscaping, and replacing it with a modern contemporary paving scheme including associated rest areas.

Part of the new pedestrianised area required Aston Street, a vehicular accessed road to be closed, which involved detailed liaison and assistance from Birmingham City Council.

The £890,000 project was undertaken in 28 weeks with new areas being handed back to the client in phases so as to minimise the disruption to the client’s environment, with the focus always being the student’s welfare and safety.

“I am really pleased with the progress & brilliant effect these small works are having around ASV & the campus, please keep up the good work and let’s get finished quickly. The Vice-Chancellor and Alastair Hewgill are being particularly complimentary about what you have achieved.”

Alan J. Charters, Director of Capital Development
