Project details

The new Assay office (Project Gateway) in Birmingham is a landmark building marking the Western ‘gateway’ to the Jewellery Quarter and St George’s masterplan. The development was designed to respond to its location at this key frontage in the Jewellery Quarter, and respect its sitting within the Conservation Area. It is the biggest Assay office in the country and the first time they have moved premises in over 200 years.

Overview

The initial works consisted of the bulk earthworks to form a split level floor area due to the underground car park, including the cut and filling of the site.

Works carried out on-site included the removal of all the existing obstructions within the ground and forming of a split level piling mat, breaking down of piles and constructing reinforced ground beams, up to 4m deep.

We also installed a new foul and storm drainage system within the site boundary, including a petrol interceptor and storm attenuation tanks located under the basement car park. The new system was then connected into an existing brick culvert 6m below the existing carriageway.

Once the steel frame was erected, we constructed a number of reinforced concrete retaining walls along the boundary of the site and a reinforced concrete retaining slab sloping from the ground floor slab to the basement slab. Our works also included the installation  of circa 2500m2 of ground floor, a basement slab and 5000m2 of upper floor slabs poured on metal decking.

The external works comprised of a concrete service yard and concrete ramp, 278 works to the six lane carriageway – Icknield Street, 600m2 of Staffordshire blue clay pavers, stainless steel bollards and street furniture.
