O’Brien Sports were awarded a JCT design and build subcontract for the delivery of new facilities at Broxhill Sports Centre in Romford.

The project involved the creation of a new full sized 3G football pitch, designed and constructed to meet the requirements of the FIFA Quality Concept, a floodlit multi-use games area, a polymeric sprint track and car park.

Challenge

The original earthworks design required sizable cut to fill with an imbalance of material. This surplus of material required sending to landfill and created a large budget deficit for our client.

Solution

During the tender stage, our earthworks team analysed the client’s original design, carried out an in-house survey using state-of-the-art satellite surveying technology and assessed how we could make improvements in order to provide cost and environmental savings by optimizing the site earthworks strategy and reposition the facilities.

The team modelling the project using “NRG Survey System” and suggesting alternative designs that included optimisation of pitch levels and landscaping solutions to achieve the illusive earthworks balance across the site.

In conjunction with the client this solution managed to totally eliminate the requirement for any material to be removed from the site and brought the scheme within the client’s original budget.

Testimonial

“We collaborated with O’Brien’s and believe the time spent prior to work commencing on site has been extremely valuable with regards to managing out the problems that are normally associated with these types of schemes.”

Results

Through our intervention, we reduced material to landfill by 100% as a direct result of a refined earthworks strategy. This intern eliminated disposal costs and ensured the scheme could be delivered within budget and on programme.
